Active noise cancelling is something we’d normally find in high-quality headphones, but it’s been making its way into more consumer products as well. The latest non-audio product to receive this useful feature is the new Genesis GV80 SUV, and it does more than just improve the listening experience inside the car. The GV80 is Genesis’ first SUV; previously, the Hyundai-owned company focused solely on sedans. This gave Genesis the chance to experiment more with a larger vehicle and include features that you wouldn’t see in regular SUVs.
From Luxury to Active Noise Control
Beyond the luxury styling and powerful engine, the GV80 offers something that headphone enthusiasts would surely appreciate: active noise control. This effectively removes outside sound while seated inside the cabin. This allows for a more peaceful and comfortable ride. Samsung’s Harman subsidiary helped Genesis make this feature come to life. It’s called Road-Noise Active Noise Control (RANC), and it focuses on removing unwanted noise from tires and the road itself. According to Harman, a survey they conducted says that road noise is the biggest auditory distraction for drivers. Even though passive forms of noise cancellation are being employed on most vehicles, using microphones and speakers to actively block out background sound is much more effective. Harman provides a more intricate explanation for how its technology works. It involves strategically placed sensors controlled by a processor: Harman further explains that error microphones are used to monitor every seat location so that each rider experiences a smooth ride. This is especially important for an SUV, since it’s larger and produces more noise while gliding through roads.
Building on the Genesis Legacy
While this isn’t the first implementation of active noise cancellation in a car — the Nissan Bluebird did it back in 1992 and more manufacturers followed suit — the GV80 does have several more features to its name. It comes with Remote Smart Park Assist for easier parking in tight spaces, an all-wheel-drive system, and up to a 3.5-liter twin turbo engine with 375 horsepower. No price has been set yet, but Genesis promises to put this on sale by summer 2020.
